September: The Month Every Paddle Surfer Should Make the Most Of

03/09/2026

August is coming to an end, beaches are emptying out, and many people are already putting their board away thinking the season is over. Big mistake. September is, for paddle surfers, one of the best months of the year — here’s why.

The water is still warm, but without the crowds

Along most of the Spanish coast, the sea keeps summer-like temperatures well into September — thermal inertia means the water takes weeks to cool down. The difference is on the beaches: without the July and August buzz, you’ll find more space, less traffic from swimmers, and a much calmer experience on the board.

Better conditions to improve

Without tourists or umbrellas everywhere, it’s easier to find clear areas to practice manoeuvres, build confidence, or simply paddle long distances without constantly dodging other swimmers. If you’ve spent all summer wanting to improve your technique, September is the perfect time to dedicate quality time to it.

The light changes, and so does the experience

The sun starts setting earlier, gifting sunrises and sunsets with a different light than summer’s — warmer, longer, ideal for those seeking calm moments on the water. Heading out to paddle first thing in the morning or at the end of the afternoon becomes a different, almost meditative experience.

No excuse to put the board away

If your inflatable board has kept you company all summer, there’s no need to say goodbye to it just yet. September — and in many areas October too — remains perfect SUP season, with the added bonus of the calm that comes once the holidays end for most people.

Make the most of these weeks: the sea is still waiting, now with less company.
